The DJI Focus Pro Hand Unit is part of DJI's Focus Pro All In One kit that also includes the DJI Lidar Rangefinder, Focus Hand Grip and Focus Pro Motor. This kit can be mixed and matched to give a wide range of functionality and different set ups.
When all used together the DJI Focus Pro Lidar gives you the ability to add autofocus to manual only Cinema Lenses and the ability to take over with wireless manual control through the Hand Unit at a moments notice. Alternatively the Hand Unit can be used as a standalone FIZ unit to allow focus pullers to wirelessly control focus, iris and zoom with the motors being powered directly over the included D-Tap to USB-C cable.
And while the Lidar autofocus is probably the more talked about feature having another affordable and easy to use wireless follow focus on the market is also very exciting. The Hand Unit is powered by standard small NP-F batteries and motors by an included D-Tap to USB-C cable. Additional motors can then be daisy chained with USB-C to USB-C cables. Once everything is powered on the lens motor can be calibrated by double pressing the button on the motor or through the ronin app or hand unit menu. Indicator lights on both the hand set and the motor will then turn green and you're ready to go.
One of the benefits of this system is that it is so simple to use and is approachable for new focus pullers, but it may lack many of the options/features more experienced users expect. There is an option to start and stop recording via bluetooth similar to DJI gimbals, which again in simple to use, but not as robust as R/S cables. This feature is also limited to cameras with bluetooth recording capabilities. There is also an option to set A/B focus marks.
The touch screen menu is quite small and can be a little difficult to operate at first. Within the menu there are settings for connecting bluetooth, calibrating motors, linking motors, changing motor torque, changing the focus knob stiffness, inverting the control rotation for F/I/Z, changing the M button function and turning off/on the backlight. And that's it. While this could be a negative for some users the simplicity of this menus does make it easier for first time users to set things up in a way that works for them.
Overall this Hand Unit is very simple, but it does what it needs to do by allowing productions on smaller budgets to wirelessly pull focus easily. No additional on camera brains, just plug in, calibrate and you're ready to roll. Add the DJI Focus Pro Hand Unit or All In One Combo to your next project.
